Fijan Consulting was founded by Dr. Robert S. Fijan, Ph.D. who has been consulting in the areas of motor vehicle accident reconstruction and biomechanical analysis for more than twenty years. He brings more than twenty years of deposition and trial testimony experience and has performed thousands of analyses related to motor vehicle accident reconstruction, occupant kinematics, injury mechanics, and human injury tolerance.
Dr. Fijan received his Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he conducted research related to dynamics and control of human joints, estimating three-dimensional kinematics, and muscle and joint forces in the human lower extremity. He served as Technical Director at Biomotion Laboratory, in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital and directed the final stages of implementation, including calibration, testing, and development of all associated software, for a novel instrumented prosthesis to measure the pressure distribution in the human hip joint in vivo. Dr. Fijan also taught and conducted research as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and in the Bioengineering Program at the University of Michigan.
Dr. Fijan has conducted numerous human-injury analyses and research studies including full-scale vehicle-to-vehicle crash tests, occupant kinematic simulations including case-specific seat belt analyses, as well as numerous other injury biomechanics analyses.
Dr. Fijan has been conducting research in the area of photogrammetry (using information from cameras and images to accurately determine three-dimensional geometry) for over twenty years. He has recently developed proprietary software for highly accurate photogrammetric reconstructions that can be used to generate precise three-dimensional computer animations of motor vehicle accidents from multiple vantage points (e.g. from the perspective of a driver, an outside observer, etc.). He is also currently developing software to obtain accurate postures and motions of pedestrians and vehicle occupants that can be used in computer simulations.
Dr. Fijan has extensive experience testifying as an expert witness at deposition and trial in the areas of accident reconstruction, biomechanics, and photogrammetry, in California, Arizona, Florida, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Delaware.
